A familiar former Winnipeg Blue Bombers player will be returning to Winnipeg.

Sergio Castillo is returning to Winnipeg as part of a trade with the BC Lions. The Lions, who held his rights to the CFL, have agreed to a conditional fourth-round 2022 CFL Draft pick for the kicker.

In 2015, Castillo made his Bomber debut, going on to play 38 CFL games with the Bombers,  Ottawa Redblacks, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and BC Lions until 2019.

"Castillo opted out of his two-year Canadian Football League contract in August of 2020 after the cancellation of the season to pursue opportunities in the National Football League," the Bombers say in a media release.

Castillo played in the NFL with the New York Jets, connecting on eight-of-13 field goals. The Bombers say this includes a 55 yarder.

The 30-year-old kicker is a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Mentor and has been for more than a decade. In a college ball interview with the Chicago Tribue, he told reporters he says Galatians 2:20 before kicking.

I really believe if you put in the hard work, you reap what you sow,’’ Castillo said in the interview.  “And God takes care of the rest.’’

Castillo said "He is the one kicking for me," giving Castillo confidence.

Canadian kicker Gabriel Ferraro has been added to the practice roster.
