An injured wild turkey has been rescued in the heart of downtown Winnipeg.

The bird was taken to the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre in Ile des Chenes, where he was examined and is now resting before a scheduled vet appointment tomorrow.

Carter Phillips, a wildlife rehabilitator with the centre, says it appears the turkey may have a broken toe but notes the severity of the injury is unknown.

Winnipeg Animal Services, Winnipeg Police Service Cadets, and Manitoba Conservation officers were involved in the rescue Friday.

Phillips says it's the first time he can remember an injured turkey was rescued from the downtown area.
