Two homes are facing fire damages after emergencies Sunday night.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services (WFPS) responded to two fires on Easter, including one caused by a cooking fire.

The first fire,  reported around 8 p.m., was in the 700 block of Dufferin Avenue at a multi-family residence. When WFPS arrived, they saw the home leaking heavy smoke and flames.

All of the home's occupants self-evacuated. One person was assessed by on-scene paramedics and was determined to need hospital care, They remain in unstable condition.

Launching an offensive attack, the fire was under control 23 minutes later.

The WFPS says unattended cooking was the cause of an accidental fire in the first 100 block of Manila Road at 8:09 p.m. Sunday. They say when they arrived, the single-family bungalow had heavy smoke pouring out of it, leading them to launch an offensive attack.

All of the residents had evacuated before the emergency crews arrived. Crews rescued their pets from inside the home. No people or pets were injured. This fire was declared under control at 8:20 p.m.

They are reminding locals to:

  • Always stay in the kitchen while cooking. Stove burners should always be turned off when leaving the kitchen, even for a short time.
  • Anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains — should always be kept away from the stovetop.
  • Oil should always be heated slowly. If cooking oil catches fire and the fire is small and manageable, use a kitchen fire extinguisher or cover the pot with a metal lid. Never use water to put out an oil fire.

No damage estimates are available for either Sunday fire.
