Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Brent Roussin, says it is not safe to assume COVID-19 isn't in your community, and actions taken today will be demonstrated in the weeks to come.

As of Saturday, April 11, 13 new cases of COVID-19 were reported by public health, bringing total lab-confirmed positive and probable positive cases to 243.

Eight individuals are in hospital, 5 of which are in the ICU.

Ninety-six individuals are reported as recovered, leaving 143 active cases. The deaths in Manitoba remain at four.

"Again, we caution Manitobans not to interpret recent case numbers to mean risk has diminished," says Dr. Roussin. "We know this virus is still present, and if we let our guards down, the transmission will again increase."

He adds you don't have to look far to see the impact the virus has had here in Canada. Across the country, tens of thousands have been infected, and many individuals have lost their lives.

Manitobans have been asked to take significant precautions over the last few weeks, and Dr. Roussin says we may be seeing those efforts paying off. Hard work of public health officials at case finding, case isolation, and contact tracing is also showing some benefits.

"Every Manitoban needs to do their part, no matter where you are in Manitoba. It's not safe to assume the virus isn't in your community, and you must assume this virus is in your community. The message is clear, stay home, practice social distancing, if you must leave your home for essential reasons only and wash your hands frequently."
