A young man who was seriously injured in a diving accident this summer says he's thankful for all the support he and his family have received. He's also asking for continued prayers.

Corey Mazinke damaged the C5 vertebrae in his neck when he dove from a houseboat near Buffalo Point on Lake of the Woods. Despite being far from shore there was a shallow sandbar which he struck. In the last month, he has overcome infections and come off a ventilator and is now preparing to enter a rehabilitation hospital.

On Saturday, August 10, Mazinke and his family provided an update through family friend Joan van der Linde.

"Firstly, thanks to everyone for the prayers, cards, visits, etc.," Mazinke says. "My swelling has gone down a bit and I’m feeling a lot better. I’m not in as much pain."

Mazinke also says that he has begun physiotherapy work on his upper body and is already gaining some strength. "Overall the recovery is going well. I’m grateful for everyone’s support. On Monday I’m moving to the rehab hospital and I will start doing physical rehabilitation."

As far as prayers go Mazinke says he has one major concern right now. "We need to pray that the swelling continues to go down and that I regain swallowing ability. This is the most important thing right now."

His parents, Ray and Marlies, are also once again thankful for the outpouring of support they received. They say that they've received many calls, messages, and cards. "The outpouring of love has been overwhelming. Thank you!"

They have also asked for prayer as they look at the logistics of accommodations as well as a daughter preparing to return to school in September.

Van der Linde says that Mazinke's recovery to date has been incredible. "We have seen miracles! By human standards, Corey should not be with us anymore," she says.

"I have witnessed significant changes. Today what impacted me the most was the hope that I saw in Corey’s eyes! It brings me to tears thinking about this. There was such sadness before. Today I saw hope! Thanks so much for your prayers! There is power in prayer!"
