An all female, all Inuit team has been chosen to curate the inaugural exhibitions of the Inuit Art Centre.

The team will be led by curator and academic Dr. Heather Igloliorte with emerging curators/artists Asinnajaq, Jade Nasogaluak Carpenter, and Krista Ulujuk Zawadski.

Dr. Igloliorte says this is the first time in history that four Inuit, that represent each of the regions of Inuit Nunangat, are working together on an exhibition.

"In the Canadian Arctic there are no universities. There are very few colleges and there are very few museums. There are not a lot of places where Inuit could get professional training to be curators of Inuit art. So I think the reason that we have had this long history of the representation of Inuit art being largely done by non Inuit, is because Inuit have not had the opportunity for the kind of training and mentorship that is required." explained Dr. Igloliorte

Asinnajaq looks forward to working with the team. She says each person brings a different perspective.

"For me, my background is mostly in film. Jade and I are both practicing artists, so we also bring that perspective. Heather and Krista come more from art history and curator roles. So we really all get to bring our knowledge together," said Asinnajaq.

The 40,000 square foot Inuit Art Centre is set to open in 2020, just in time for Manitoba's 150th anniversary.
