The Canada Day long weekend proved to be a dangerous one.

Winnipeg Police Services (WPS) reports 9 violent crimes from the past long weekend.

According to WPS, "The weekend was really not unusual for what we expect to see this time of year based on past summers. Although the Canada Day long week was a busy one in terms of call volume we are relieved to have seen an improvement over last year."

Firstly, WPS reports one arrest for attempted murder.

WPS says, "On June 29, 2019, at approximately 10:10 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of a female stabbed in the 100 block of Greenway Cresent. Officers attended and located an adult female suffering from severe upper body injuries. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Officers were then advised the RCMP had the suspect in custody in the 4100 block of Portage Avenue.

"It was learned that following the attack on the victim, the suspect stole the victim's vehicle and while travelling westbound on Highway 1 veered into oncoming traffic striking a semi-truck. He then fled the vehicle and jumped under another passing semi-truck. Due to his injuries, the suspect was transported to a hospital for treatment. Naresh Ramnanan, a 53-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been arrested for: Attempt to Commit Murder, Aggravated Assault, Theft of Motor Vehicle, Assault with a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon, and Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance."

Secondly, there were two separate shootings. At this time, investigators do not believe the two incidents are connected.

The first, WPS says, "On June 29, 2019, at approximately 3:00 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of a male shot in the area of Langside Street and Sara Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male with apparent upper-body gunshot wounds. He was transported to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable."

In a second release, WPS says, "On June 30, 2019, at approximately 6:00 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of a male shot in the 300 block of Manitoba Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower body. He was transported to hospital in stable condition."

Both crimes are being investigated by the Major Crimes Unit.

WPS reports three assaults with weapons.

In their release, WPS says, "On June 29, 2019, at approximately 6:40 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of an injured female in the area of Kate Street and Notre Dame Avenue.

"Upon arrival, officers located an adult female suffering from upper body injuries, consistent with being struck by a bladed weapon. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable.

The second assault occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m on June 30. when members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of an injured male in the 400 block of Portage Avenue.

An adult male was found suffering from upper body injuries, consistent with being stabbed. After being treated in hospital, he was upgraded to stable condition.

WPS says, "It was learned that the victim was attacked at a restaurant/bar in the 200 block of Edmonton Street and walked to the area of Portage Avenue and Kennedy Street. Before the altercation, another adult male was injured inside the business while trying to break up an altercation."

The third assault, also on June 30, occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. Members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of an injured male in the 3100 block of Pembina Highway.

WPS says, "Upon arrival, officers located a 23-year-old male suffering from upper body injuries, consistent with being stabbed. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition. It was learned that the male and a female known to him became involved in a verbal confrontation which escalated to the point of the female arming herself with a knife and eventually stabbing the male."

The 31-year-old female of Winnipeg has been arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault and Failure to Comply with Recognizance. She has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

All three assault investigations are ongoing.
