The Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service says nobody was hurt after a Monday morning fire in a large apartment building in the Maples.

Crews were called just before noon to a monitored fire alarm in a ten-storey apartment complex in the 200 block of Adsum Drive. Upon arrival on scene, crews were directed to a fire in a third-storey suite.

An offensive attack was initiated and the fire was very quickly knocked down. Damage was contained to the suite where the fire originated.

Occupants of the complex had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. They were all able to return to their suites once the fire was extinguished with the exception of the occupants of the suite where the fire occurred.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental due to unattended cooking. Residents are reminded to always stay in the kitchen while cooking. Stove burners should always be turned off when leaving the kitchen, even for a short time. Anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — should always be kept away from the stovetop.
