Nearly 200 semi trucks blared their horns as they made their way around Winnipeg to raise money for Special Olympics Manitoba.

The Truck Convoy for Special Olympics roared down Highway 59 and the Perimeter Highway today after departing from it's starting point in Ile de Chenes. The 11th annual fundraiser has netted over $500,000 for Special Olympics Manitoba, and officials believe they will cross $600,000 with this year's proceeds.

"All funds that are raised here support programming in all seven of our regions in the province," said Darren Anderson, manager of law enforcement, torch run and partnerships with Special Olympics Manitoba. "This really helps us with athlete development, coach development, volunteer training and a whole gamut of things that really help us out."

Anderson says the funds raised during the event are a combination of drivers or companies registering their trucks, as well as private, in-person and online donations. He says it's a fun event every year and reminds them of all the support they have throughout the province.

"We're just flabbergasted with everything we receive," Anderson said. "It's awesome to see such a unique partnership between us, law enforcement, trucking associations and the local community. It's a nice way to come together and it makes our athletes happy and they come out and get to ride in the trucks so they have a lot of fun."
