The City of Winnipeg's 2018 draft budget has many transit users frustrated.

As of January 1st, 2018, bus fare will increase by 25 cents, which means a one way trip will cost $2.95

The city is also proposing reduced service on 23 routes, exactly where and when is yet to be determined. That will take effect in June.

Jana, a regular transit user says the changes will affect her greatly.

"My ride to work is about an hour. If they are cutting back more, then it might take me longer in between my transfers, because I have to take three buses home. I hope they don't cut one the buses that I use.

According to the city, the fare hikes and route changes are needed to compensate for a $10 million dollar deficit, most of which it attributes to the province ending a 50/50 transit funding agreement.

"I think the transit drivers do the best they can with what they're given, and I really do applaud them. I just wish our government would back us up a little bit better."

The 2018 budget will be up for debate over the next couple of weeks, with council voting on it during a special meeting on December 12th.
