It was a tense morning for tenants of an apartment complex in Transcona.

A fire broke out shortly after 7 a.m. Monday, in a three storey building at 128 Kildare Avenue W.

Pauline Klassen lives in the complex. She says it was nerve wracking and scary not knowing what was going on.

"I just heard the fire alarms go off, thinking they were just testing it for maintenance purposes, and then I checked to see, and when I opened my apartment door I noticed smoke in the hallway. I grabbed what I could and walked out," said Klassen.

District Chief and Incident Commander, Gord Cannell, says the fire sent one person to hospital.

"We had a fire on the third floor of an apartment block with heavy damage to the suite . One adult male was taken to hospital in critical condition," explained Cannell.

He says the current status of the victim is unknown at this time.

There is no word on what caused the fire.

The investigation is ongoing.
