Winnipeg Police have provided an update on a collision between a train and a pedestrian.

Police closed traffic at Shaftesbury Boulevard and Elmhurst Road around Wilkes Avenue Friday morning, and a train was stopped on tracks in the area.

Public information officer constable Jay Murray said yesterday an engineer on a passing train had spotted an injured man on the tracks, and contacted police.

A man in his thirties was taken to hospital in critical condition. Murray said the man had suffered significant injuries and called his condition "quite dire."

Police aren't sure if the collision was intentional or not, but the circumstances of his injuries are not believed to be criminal in nature.

Murray said the operating theory is that the train that stopped on scene, the one with the engineer who called in the report, is not involved in the collision, but that had not yet been confirmed.
