A man is facing charges for a gang-related dispute that injured a man during a shooting in 2019.

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) major crimes unit conducted an extensive investigation into the shooting that took place on Sept. 12, 2019 at around 1 a.m.

A group is believed to have encountered a man in the south lane behind the 200 block of Portage Ave, resulting in the man being shot and a bullet hitting the WPS downtown headquarters. The shot narrowly missed a cadet who was leaving the building.

A 25-year-old man went to a nearby hospital shortly after the shooting with a gunshot wound. He was charged with firearm-related offences after it was discovered he had hidden a firearm near the shooting scene before he sought medical help.

On Mar. 28, 2021, a suspect was arrested on a warrant for firearm-related offences at an address in Montreal, Quebec.

Members of the Service de police de la Ville de Montreal executed the search warrant. The man was returned to Winnipeg Friday by members of the WPS major crimes unit.

The 22-year-old man of Montreal, Quebec is facing seven charges, including unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm, assault with a weapon, and discharge of a restricted or prohibited firearm with intent.

The man has been detained in custody.

A second suspect involved in the shooting has also been identified by investigators, but the suspect has since become deceased during an unrelated homicide.
