More elementary students are getting to take in Discovery Days at the University of Manitoba.

Event coordinator Kyla Smith, who is a masters graduate student in the Physics and Astronomy department, says last year three school divisions were invited and this year there are six. Smith says diversity in science is important to her.

"I think the reason I'm doing it is because I want the kids to find their place in science. I want us to promote, to be honest, diversity in science," says Smith.

"We're trying to give an opportunity to people who may not otherwise see a place for themselves in science. Just today, when one of the first buses pulled up, this little kid came off the bus, like must have been in grade three, and looked up at the sky, around at the buildings, and actually said -- their guide heard them say -- "Wow, one day I'm going to go here."

Nearly 2,000 students from six school divisions are taking part today and tomorrow. Smith, who is from rural British Columbia, says they made an effort this year to bring out more rural schools.
