The Manitoba RCMP says that they have identified a homicide victim discovered at the end of June in Portage la Prairie.

Police were called to an area near Baker Street the evening of June 24, for a report of found human remains. Investigators with Major Crime Services and Forensic Identification Services attended the scene and worked with the Medical Examiner's Office to determine that it was a homicide.

On Friday, July 10, 2020, a description of the victim and a plea for information about his identity was released. Another plea for information as to the identity of the victim was made on July 15.

As a direct result of this second plea, information was received that enabled investigators to confirm the identity of the victim.

The victim is Gerhard Reimer-Wiebe, a 27-year-old male from Steinbach who was living in Winnipeg. Gerhard, who also goes by the name George, was known to frequent homeless shelters within the city.

The RCMP is releasing his image in the hopes that someone recognizes him and can provide important information on his activities between May 15 and June 20, 2020.

Anyone who has information about Gerhard between May 15 and June 20, 2020, is asked to call the RCMP Major Crime Services Tip Line at 431-489-8551.

The investigation is ongoing.
