The details still need to hashed out, but the St. James Civic Centre is going to get some work.

The province will be contributing up to $3.9-million and Winnipeg city council has authorized up to $6-million for the proposed project, which will support enhanced space for programming for seniors, children and families.

City councillor and finance committee chair Scott Gillingham says the funds will enhance the civic centre and improve its capacity to meet the community's needs, specifically the needs of people aged 55+.

Connie Newman is the executive director of the Manitoba Association of Senior Centres. She says the civic centre will be a true multi-generational, multi-purpose community centre.

"The St. James Civic Centre will soon be an even more age-friendly place where people of all ages and cultures can meet and participate in many healthy opportunities," she says.

The renovated centre will house the St. James-Assiniboia 55+ Centre. According to Newman, the civic centre will also be homebase for a Healthy Aging Resource Team, which includes a dietician and a social worker.

The scope, design, budget, and timeline of the project are still being developed.

Municipal relations minister Jeff Wharton says the province's $3.9-million contribution is in addition to provincial funds available to the city under its municipal infrastructure funding basket for 2018.
