Residents in the area of Toniata are being asked to avoid the area and keep roads clear for inter-provincial fire crews.

Falcon Lake's horizon is smokey as a fire burns on in the Whiteshell Wednesday afternoon. The province says 40 hectares are burning near Toniata, a community on the edge of Falcon Lake.

Fire crews from Manitoba and Ontario are on the scene of the fire with water bombers.

"Apparently no cottages have been consumed by the fire but at least one (of the cottages) the firefighters have soaked down and saved so far," Whiteshell Cottagers Association says.

The Province of Manitoba's Wildfire Service is asking people to avoid the area South of Whiteshell as they fight the fires.

"Crews are battling a fire and need to keep roads clear and people safe. Fire risk is high in MB, please be cautious and help prevent fires," the province tweets.

They say firefighters are making progress with the flames, but Manitoba continues to have a high fire risk.

This is a developing story.
