Parts of Manitoba are now officially under a severe thunderstorm warnings.

Environment Canada has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of western Manitoba.

Areas currently under the warning are:

  • Morden-Winkler-Altona-Morris
  • Killarney - Pilot Mound - Manitou, Man.

Areas currently under the watch are:

  • Virden - Souris, Man. 
  • Minnedosa - Riding Mountain National Park, Man.
  • Brandon - Neepawa - Carberry - Treherne
  • Melita-Boissevain-Turtle Mountain Provincial Park, Man.

From Environment Canada:

The severe thunderstorm is approaching the Hartney region and is moving southeast at 40 km/h.

If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

UPDATE 1:56 p.m.: Severe thunderstorm warnings issued

Environment Canada has now issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the following areas in Manitoba:

  • R.M. of Wallace-Woodworth incl. Virden Elkhorn and Kenton, Man. (051110)
  • R.M. of Pipestone incl. Oak Lake Res., Man. (051160)

Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, nickel to ping pong ball size hail and heavy rain.

This severe thunderstorm is located near Maryfield and is moving to the east/northeast at approximately 50 km/h.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops.

New thunderstorm warnings have been issued for the following areas:

  • Mun. of Grassland incl. Hartney and Minto, Man. (051310)
  • Mun. of Two Borders incl. Melita Coulter and Tilston, Man. (051320)
  • Mun. of Brenda-Waskada incl. Medora and Goodlands, Man. (051331)
  • Mun. of Deloraine-Winchester, Man. (051332)
  • Mun. of Boissevain-Morton incl. Turtle Mtn Prov. Park, Man. (051340)

Environment Canada says this storm is capable of producing nickel size hail. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

UPDATE 4:35 p.m.: New warnings issued

New thunderstorm warnings have been issued for:

  • Melita-Boissevain-Turtle Mountain Prov. Park

This storm is capable of very strong wind gusts, nickel size hail and heavy rain.

UPDATE 4:55 p.m.: New watches issued

New thunderstorm watches issued for:

  • Morden-Winkler-Altona-Morris

Environment Canada is advising residents to be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions.

UPDATE 5:10 p.m.: Warnings and watches

A thunderstorm warning has been issued for:

  • Morden-Winkler-Altona-Morris

Warning has been changed to severe thudnerstorm watch in:

  • Melita-Boissevain-Turtle Mountain Prov. Park
