A senior residence in Winnipeg honoured senior graduates of West Kildonan Collegiate with a processional, music, and pom-pom waving on June 25, 2020.

The staff at River Ridge II Retirement Residence called it "Seniors Celebrating Seniors". The residence is right across the street from the Collegiate.

Chassity McIntyre, the lifestyle director at the seniors residence says, "We had posters, music, three giant speakers outside and we played the grad processional. They walked, some of them had their grad caps [on]. Our seniors were up on balconies, in the patio [area] and everybody was waving their pom-poms. We had such a wonderful time cheering them on!"

McIntyre's in charge of the marketing aspect of the building, and leases out units. She also has two children, one of whom graduated from the Collegiate last year and another that will be graduating next year.

She shares that since COVID-19 hit, the change and lockdown they've experienced hasn't been easy. "It's been a trying time for our seniors, absolutely. Our building has been closed to visitors. We've been having to learn all sorts of different practices."

There are 150 Seniors living in River Ridge II and hand washing and mask wearing have become their new normal since March.

When it came to planning the event, McIntyre says, "We thought if we did some colours out on balconies to show them that we were supporting them. We thought we could put together some signs and send them off to the school. Then our director Nicole thought that we could see if any of the students wanted to come and walk by in their gowns or dresses, maybe we could put together a bit of a processional."

As McIntyre has children in that school, she was able to speak to them about this idea ahead of time.
