A 71-year-old man is dead after the vehicle he was driving collided with a train on Thursday afternoon.

The Manitoba RCMP says that officers from the Portage la Prairie detachment responded to a collision between a vehicle and train just after 12 p.m.

The collision occurred on Road 52 West, located just north of Highway 1, approximately 20 kilometres west of Portage la Prairie.

Investigators have determined that an SUV, being driven by a 71-year-old male from Bagot, Man., was travelling southbound on Road 52 West when the SUV was struck by an eastbound CN train.

The driver of the SUV was pronounced deceased on scene.

Officers from Portage la Prairie along with an RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist continue to assist CN Police Service in the investigation.
