A busy West End street was closed Thursday morning as fire crews battled a blaze in the area.

The fire broke out around 1:40 a.m. in a vacant bungalow in the 700 block of Arlington Street.

Winnipeg police officers were patrolling the area when they noticed the fire. They quickly contacted the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

When crews arrived, heavy smoke and flames were pouring out of the home. Crews initially launched a defensive fire attack from the exterior. Once conditions improved, they were able to enter the house and transition to an interior fire attack. The fire was declared under control just before 3:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
