Flood conditions in the R.M. of Piney improved significantly over the weekend, but the municipality continues to monitor weather conditions.

Chief Administrative Officer Martin Van Osch says the water has receded over the last couple of days but the ground is still saturated so even a small amount of rainfall could turn into runoff and cause more localized flooding.

"We had some scattered showers early this morning in the far east end of the municipality. We watched those closely. We heard of heavy rains for about an hour in the Sprague area, it did increase water levels in the Sprague River slightly but not to a point of concern. There are some more showers to move through the area later today. We will monitor those closely."

Van Osch says the area of concern in Piney is the Sundown and Sirko area which borders the R.M. of Stuartburn.

Piney Reeve Wayne Anderson says they are in no rush to lift the state of local emergency as it gives the municipality the ability to quickly respond to further flooding if it arises.

"We will probably leave it on until the next council meeting so we don't have to make a special meeting, save a little money there, it is not going to hurt to have it on. It is a week from tomorrow is our next meeting."

Meanwhile, Van Osch says road repairs in the R.M. of Piney are ongoing.

"We still have at least four or five complete washouts. The road infrastructure is for local traffic only. We are advising people to drive with caution, don't go there if you don't have to go there, we are busy repairing the infrastructure but it takes time and it may take weeks for some of this damage to be repaired."
