It was a beautiful fall morning as hundreds of individuals gathered today to Ride (and walk) for Refuge.

The annual event is held across Canada as a way to support local and global ministries who work with "displaced, vulnerable and exploited people", according to Terry Martin, organizer of Ride for Refuge and a representative of the event's host charity, Rising Above.

Walkers and riders gather sponsorships in support of a ministry of their choice, then proceed to participate in one of the offered events, including the 50 km, 25 km, and 10 km rides, and the 5 km walk.

Cyclist Collen Kramer, a participant in the 50 km ride, was beyond excited to participate and raise funding for her charity of choice, Naomi House.

"It's a transitional home for newly arriving refugees, who would now like to be considered former refugees, because they now consider Canada their home." Kramer's husband was instrumental in the construction of the establishment, and as such the couple holds the cause close to their hearts.

As of the beginning of her event this morning, Kramer's team had already raised 133% of their fundraising goal for the charity.

Shirley Stephens, another event participant, rode today in support of Ratanak International, a ministry that works in Cambodia to combat human trafficking and exploitation.

Martin was thrilled with the funds raised this year, which currently sits at a total of $164,362. He also wants to encourage riders to already begin looking ahead to their 2018 event.

"Get involved next year!" he grinned. "It's always the Saturday before Thanksgiving."
