For one Manitoba family, excited to see their son drafted to the NHL, success isn't about the level of hockey competed at.

Morgan Geekie was one of eight Manitobans drafted this past weekend. The Strathclair, Manitoba native was drafted in the third round by the Carolina Hurricanes.

For his dad, Craig, it was an exciting moment. "It's a once in a lifetime moment, and at the end of the day, it's something that he's worked for since a young age. For us it was very exciting, though a bit low key," Craig says, describing a family gathering they had at the house to watch the draft.

"You kind of don't know what to expect . . . and I was the first one that saw his name come up. So I kind of jumped up, and you're hooting and hollering. It was lots of fun. I was very happy."

Though Morgan has achieved his goal of being drafted into the NHL, for the family, that won't determine his success according to dad.

"Success is thought of in different ways for us. You have to really start to worry about how Morgan is as a person first, and how he treats other people. It's really about the relationships he builds. If you start from there, it's really about how they treat others, act outside the house, and show others respect."

Humility and respect are something that both Craig, and his wife, have tried to establish in all three of their boys. "It's not hard. Don't get me wrong, he's a very mature 18-year-old. And we're very happy with how he's grown up and handled this.

"At the end of the day remaining humble, and understanding this doesn't happen to everybody - that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity - it's definitely something we try to instill in all our kids."
