After finding no trace of two murder suspects in York Landing, RCMP resources have returned to Gillam in an effort to refocus their search.

Manitoba RMCP reports that after searching the area of York Landing, they were unable to substantiate the tip that the suspects Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, had been in the area. Helicopters, drones, military resources, and door-to-door canvasses were all conducted as part of the investigation.

As a result, the significant police presence in the area has been withdrawn, with RCMP reporting that regular police presence has returned to York Landing.

"The RCMP thanks the community for their patience and understanding, and continues to remind residents to remain vigilant," said Cpl. Julie Courchaine, Media Relations Officer in a release.

With resources currently remaining in the Gillam area, RCMP says that searches will continue to be conducted in "high probability areas for any signs of the suspects."

Remote areas are being searched both by officers on foot and in the air. However, the check stop along the road leading into Gillam has been removed at this time. The Royal Canadian Air Force continues to assist in the manhunt.

Over 500 homes have been visited to date by officers in the Gillam area, and officers are reported to have finished their door-to-door canvassing of Fox Lake Cree Nation and Gillam, Manitoba.

In the past week, investigators involved with the search for McLeod and Schmegelsky have received upwards of 260 tips, with none establishing that the suspects no longer remain in the Gillam area. RCMP still believe in the possibility, though, that the suspects may have received help inadvertently in leaving the area.

"We continue to investigate all possibilities," says the RCMP.

Police request that anyone with tips about the suspects immediately contact their local police. "It is critical that all Canadians remain vigilant for Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky. If they are spotted, do not approach, call 9-1-1 or your local police immediately."
