The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is charging a law enforcement officer following a sexual assault investigation.

IIU says that on July 27, they were made aware of an alleged sexual assault and sexual interference.

They say they did a thorough and independent investigation regarding the allegations and are now charging one person.

"The IIU has conducted a thorough and independent investigation into the circumstances of this incident," the IIU says in a statement.

IIU says their Civilian Director Zane Tessler says there are reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred. The organization is charging an RCMP officer with sexual assault and sexual interference.

They were arrested and released on an undertaking. They are set to appear in Provincial Court.

IIU says they will not be releasing any more information on this investigation due to its sensitive nature.
