A teen is in custody after RCMP allege he barricaded himself in an apartment and held a woman and an infant against their will.

The incident took place in Flin Flon, Man., in the early evening hours of Sunday, February 7. RCMP say they were called at approximately 5:40 p.m., to a report of a male inside an apartment with a firearm who was not letting a female and an infant leave.

"Officers quickly surrounded the residence, and officers were deployed from surrounding communities to assist," the RCMP says in a release.

A hostage negotiator was on scene to attempt to make contact with the 19-year-old male suspect. At the time, the temperature was -44 degrees Celsius.

The suspect exited the apartment and then tried to re-enter the building when he was arrested. In the course of the arrest, the suspect assaulted one of the officers, who sustained a minor injury. Officers entered the apartment and assisted the victims. The female and the infant were not injured.

The male faces numerous charges, including Use of a Firearm in Taking Hostage, Unlawful Confinement, Assault a Peace Officer, and several firearm-related charges.
