Due to the uncertainty around ice conditions, the province has asked anglers to take their ice-fishing shelters off the Red River as soon as possible.

Manitoba Sustainable Development is advising fishers to get their ice-fishing shelters off all bodies of water as soon as possible. Water moving north from the United States has created unexpected conditions, with the water expected to rise by eight to ten feet.

Many shelters in the Selkirk area have been removed to accommodate ice cutting and ice-breaking equipment, but many shelters still remain in the Lockport area.

Under provincial regulations, ice-fishing shelters must be removed by March 12 on the Red River, March 31 across the rest of southern Manitoba and by April 15 for the rest of Manitoba unless requested to do so sooner because of unsafe ice conditions.

All anglers are urged to be careful, cautious and conscientious about the removal of their property. Check the ice conditions first before heading out onto the ice.
