After losing one residence building this past June to fire, Providence University College announced their new residence plans and construction date.

Providence announced Thursday that construction of the new residence would begin later this year and be completed by September 2019.

The new facility, known currently as the "Living & Learning Centre", was designed to promote a Christ-centered student community.

"We're really wanting to drive community with this building," said Marlin Reimer, the associate vice-president for student life.

Reimer says the building has been drawn to give students the ability to learn and study, while also giving youth the chance to engage in the Prov community. Places like a kitchen, lounge, prayer rooms and study areas within a module of rooms are a start, as is a generous use of glass to let natural light in as the building overlooks the Rat River.

The building will also be shaped like a cross, which was done intentionally. It's meant to emphasize the school's commitment to Christ-centred education.

The former residence, Bergen Hall, burned down last June. Reimer says the community and the alumni stepped up to help.

"People have been so supportive," Reimer explained. "So many people were phoning and asking what they could do and how could they help."

The facility will be completed in time for the 2019-20 school year and will be able to house 130 male and female students.
