The Winnipeg Police Service is asking motorists to avoid a stretch of southbound Main Street in the city's downtown on Tuesday morning following an early-morning crash involving a transit bus.

The WPS says the collision occurred around 1 a.m., with the bus taking out a number of light posts.

It's not clear at this time what caused the collision.

Two lanes of southbound Main Street are closed between William Ave. and McDermot Ave. while Manitoba Hydro and Winnipeg Transit Services crews work in the area.

Besides the driver, there were two passengers on the bus at the time of the crash. One person was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Limited lanes of traffic on southbound Main St between William Av and McDermot Av have been reopened. Motorists are encouraged to select alternate routes for their morning commute. Crews from MB Hydro Crews and City of Winnipeg Traffic Services will remain working in the area.
