The Winnipeg Sex Crimes Unit has taken over an investigation after a woman was sexually assaulted near the Law Courts office on Friday early morning.

Updated suspect description:

- A male, in his 20s-30s, approximately 5’9” in height
- Larger build with long dark hair
- Wearing glasses
- Has a mustache
- Wearing a black jacket

Previously:

On March 17, 2023, at approximately 7:00 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the Provincial Court Law Courts Building located at 408 York Avenue for the report of an adult female who was assaulted by an unknown male.
 
Central District General Patrol Officers met with the 20-year-old female victim suffering from an upper-body injury sustained from a physical assault. She was transported to the hospital in stable condition, where she received medical care.
 
The victim was walking from St. Mary Avenue and Kennedy Street to the Provincial Court Law Courts Building at approximately 5:45 a.m. when an unknown male began to follow her. As the victim reached the Kennedy Street entrance of the building, the suspect approached the victim, and a struggle ensued. The victim fell to the sidewalk, and the suspect touched the victim on the lower body. The suspect fled on foot before police arrived.
 
The Sex Crimes Unit has assumed the investigation.
 
An initial suspect description was provided as follows:
 
- A male, 20 to 30 yrs of age, approximately 5’9”
- Larger build with long dark hair
- Wearing a black jacket
- No race description
