The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is investigating an incident that sent three people to the hospital with serious injuries.

A suspect and two police officers required medical care after a police cruiser struck them Saturday morning.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says the two officers in the 600 block of Manitoba Avenue were trying to arrest a suspect who was in a stopped taxi. The Winnipeg Police Service says this is part of a drug investigation.

The male suspect then fled the taxi on foot at 10:54 a.m. While chasing the man, they were all hit by a police vehicle that was being driven by a third police officer.

All three were sent to the hospital. The suspect is facing internal injuries and lacerations and is being observed. One of the two officers is suffering from a broken pelvis.

"As broken bones and any internal injuries that require admission to a hospital on an in-patient basis are defined as serious injuries under the IIU regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate," IIU says in a statement.

They are asking those who have additional information or video footage to contact the IIU at 1-844-667-6060
