The Winnipeg Police Service says that a tense situation has now been resolved in the city's North End. 

A heavy police presence was in the area after reports of shots fired came from a place they had already been earlier in the day.

Residents had been told to stay indoors, and area schools were in hold & secure.

Const. Rob Carver of the WPS said to media he could appreciate what a scary situation it was for residents, especially families.

Police tactical units took at least one person into custody around 6:30 p.m.

Winnipeg police have been recalled to a residence in the area of Salter St. and Bannerman Ave. in response to what they're calling an armed and barricaded situation. 

Just before 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, the Winnipeg Police Service said officers were responding to a serious incident in the area. They then said it was resolved around 11:00 a.m. 

However, police went back to the scene just after 12:00 p.m. and now there are reports of shots fired from the residence. 

Const. Rob Carver issued an update and says the two incidents are related and the standoff is ongoing. 

"I can tell you we've had shots fired by an individual in the residence as well as by our officers," Carver said. "We're not aware of anybody hit. We have as significant police presence and we've blocked off a large area around here so everyone is safe. It's tough to get into the area and that's to maintain the safety of everyone who lives here or has a reason to be here." 

St. John's High School, Champlain School and Machray School have all been locked down as a precaution.
