Winnipeg Police say two men and a teenage boy are facing charges after an armed standoff in the 100 block of Chudley Ave. yesterday.

Police originally responded to a report to check on a person's well-being around 4:10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 after reports of a possible gun shot. That situation eventually evolved into what police called an "armed and barricaded" scenario, which led to the police tactical support team, the armoured police vehicle and crisis negotiators being deployed.

Police say after a nearly 12 hour standoff, the situation was resolved without injury to residents in the area, the accused or officers.

"We're taking every precaution we can to make sure everyone is safe," Const. Rob Carver said earlier Friday afternoon. "We want to be as prudent and patient as we can to resolve this without any injuries or without any lethal force used, and to do that effectively we need some time."

Police had asked people in the area to stay in their houses and the nearby Shaughnessy Park School was locked down throughout the day. Police say all the kids got home safely.

Carver said there was a relatively large group of people in the house and a number of them left at different times throughout the morning and afternoon.

Winnipeg Police issued an update on Saturday morning, saying three suspects were socializing at the Chudley residence around 2:00 a.m. and left to rob a residence on Flora Ave. with a sawed-off shotgun. Police allege one of the suspects fired a shot through the door at that residence, injuring a woman who was taken to hospital, where she remains in stable condition.

Police say the suspects then returned to the Chudley residence and had a dispute with someone, which led to one of them allegedly pointing the shotgun at him. Shortly after officers arrived, two males - including one of the suspects - exited the residence and were taken into custody. The other suspects remained inside and allegedly wouldn't allow four youth boys to leave.

Police say everyone in the house was safely detained around 4:50 p.m. on Friday, and officers seized the shotgun.

18-year-old Kenneth Edward Munroe, 22-year-old Lonny Lee Chudrick and a 15-year-old were all charged in connection to both incidents. As well, two youths - aged 16 and 13 - were charged with Fail to Comply Condition Undertaking by Judge/Justice but have not been charged in direct relation to the standoff.

Const. Jay Murray said Saturday that these situations are very volatile, but the public did a good job of letting the officers do their jobs.

"An incident that appears to be stagnant for hours can change on a moments notice," Murray said. "It's very stressful for officers who have to give their undivided attention to the target residence and it can dramatically change our tactics if someone wanders into the scene and we have to divert our attention."
