Due to more robberies as of late, the Winnipeg Police Service posted a video to their Twitter account of how to buy and sell items online safely.

"The Winnipeg Police Service has seen an increase of calls regarding robberies to do with buy and sell sites," says one Winnipeg Police Officer.

People are being asked to meet up at a specific location, and when they show up to purchase an item, they are instead being robbed.

"I understand that these sites are handy, however, you need to be safe and savvy when you complete these transactions."

The officer gives specific safety precautions when meeting up with a seller in person.

"Always complete the transactions during daylight hours and in public places, including the Winnipeg Police Service stations that have free exchange zones."

There are four safe zones in Winnipeg and they are located on Smith St., Grant Ave., Hartford Ave., and Dugald Rd.

"If someone doesn't want to meet there, that should be a red flag. Never attend alone, always bring someone with you."

While it's more common not to carry cash on your person, the police suggest just having the amount you need.

"Next, I would suggest you carry only the amount of money to pay for that item being purchased."

Being aware of your surroundings is an important part of an exchange as well, according to the police.

"Last and most important, trust your instinct. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't."
