Authorities say a man is dead and others are seriously injured after the driver tried to overtake a snowplow Tuesday night.

At 10:30 p.m., emergency crews were called to the Disraeli Freeway bridge. When they got to the northbound crash, they found a four-door vehicle and large snow-clearing front-end loader in a serious crash.

"It is believed the vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed in attempts to overtake the snow-removal machine and its pilot vehicle when it lost control and crashed into the front-end loader," the Winnipeg Police Service says in a statement.

The driver of the four-door, a man in his 30s, was extracted from the vehicle but was pronounced dead on the scene. The front passenger, a woman in her 20s, also required extraction. She is facing life-threatening injuries and is in the hospital.

A teenager who was in the backseat is facing serious injuries. They were taken to the hospital in unstable condition and is now in stable condition.

The Traffic Division is investigating, hoping to get help from the public. Those with information about this crash are being asked to call 204-986-7085.
