Police say a stolen vehicle drove directly at officers yesterday evening during a car chase that ended in Elmwood.

A stolen vehicle was observed by police around 8:55 p.m. being driven around the area of Munroe Avenue and Watt Street. When the vehicle came to a dead-end lot, a marked Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) car pulled in behind it.

At that time, the suspect vehicle drove at the officers, who discharged their firearms in response. The stolen vehicle hit the police car, and the suspect fled the scene a short distance before they crashed into a building located near Watt Street and Larsen Avenue.

Police located one suspect in the vehicle and deployed a conducted energy weapon (Taser) on the suspect in order to safely place them under arrest.

A second suspect who had not been initially noticed by officers escaped to the police cruiser, which he stole and used to flee the scene. The stolen cruiser was abandoned in the area of Harbison Avenue and Glenwood Crescent after being driven through the Elmwood neighbourhood.

After abandoning the vehicle, the second suspect, a male, fled on foot. He remains at large at this time.

Earlier: Witnesses say that a police pursuit came to an end in the middle of an Elmwood street Monday evening.

A red SUV was being pursued by police when it went on to the sidewalk and hit a building, according to the witnesses, before coming to a rest in the middle of Watt Street.
