A Canadian church is in mourning after their pastor died in a horrific car crash last week.

Rev. Tom Cheung was identified as the victim of the crash yesterday. It took place near the Peace Arch Border Crossing near Surrey, B.C. just before noon on Thursday, May 2, 2019.

A vehicle slammed into Cheung's minivan pushing it 200 feet. Witnesses say that the van burst into flames upon impact. Cheung was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Despite many challenges and difficulties, he remained faithful, obedience, and continued helping people and leading people to Christ."

A fundraiser set up for his family says that Cheung "was a loving husband of Athens, a caring devoted father of Solomon, Benjamin and Elisha; and a generous Pastor with lots of love and patience to many." He was the pastor of Port Moody Pacific Grace MB Church.

Cheung came to Canada from Hong Kong with his family in 1996. He and his wife have two sons and one daughter together.

The online fundraiser says that Cheung, who was in his early 50s, was the main income-earner for the family.

Cheung has been described as a loving father, husband, and pastor.

Pastor Peter Teh, a friend of Cheung's, said in a written statement, "A lot of people are touched by him. People just love him. A kind person. A faithful Christian leader. It's tragic and it's shocking."

"He was a man who loved God and His Word dearly," the organizers of the fundraiser said.

"Many lives are blessed, transformed, and renewed through Tom and Athens’ ministries. Despite many challenges and difficulties, he remained faithful, obedience, and continued helping people and leading people to Christ."

The driver of the other vehicle, a resident of Washington state, was taken to hospital after the crash. He was then taken into police custody but has since been released. RCMP continue with the investigation.
