A five-year-old boy is recovering in Winnipeg after a devastating fire.

RCMP Manitoba says officers raced to rescue a young boy who was trapped in a house fire on Saturday afternoon.

Moose Lake RCMP officers were called to a fire down the road from them on Spruce Street in Mosakahiken Cree Nation. At 4:25 p.m., a woman went to the attachment, telling them a child was still inside the burning building.

"Officers ran across the street and saw the smoke was thick," RCMP Manitoba says in a Monday statement. "An officer and a member of the community attempted to enter the house, but they couldn’t get very far."

Breaking windows, the smoke began to escape the home. Two officers entered, taking breaths inside each room. They found a five-year-old boy on the ground, covered in a blanket.

"They scooped up the child and immediately ran outside."

He was brought to a Winnipeg hospital, where he remains in stable condition. The two officers were treated at the community's nursing station.

An adult male, an adult female, another five-year-old male, and a two-year-old male escaped the fire. They had minor injuries.
