There’s a heightened sense of caution in Steinbach as two restaurants closed after employees tested positive for COVID-19.

Smitty’s and Boston Pizza both shut their doors to the public this weekend.

Meanwhile, other restaurants have also closed as a precautionary measure. In a post on social media, local burger joint Golden Fried said, “We are closing to ensure the future safety of our staff and guests! This is a proactive measure we have decided to take as a team!”

Bigg Smoak and Sawney Beans restaurants also posted notices about temporarily closing while their staff is being tested.

Meanwhile, Canadian Tire has posted signs on its doors saying the major retailer is closed for cleaning. Employees told SteinbachOnline that they were not to come into work after a staff member’s COVID test came back positive.

Canadian Tire responded to the closure saying "If an employee at one of our stores has been exposed to or tested positive for COVID-19, we support the employee in following Public Health’s recommendations. The store would close and undergo a deep-clean and sanitization, over and above the current enhanced cleaning measures, to ensure the continued safety of our employees and customers." They expect to reopen Wednesday morning.

The Steinbach Credit Union also posted a notice on their website that one of the Steinbach branch employees tested positive for COVID-19. “We first learned of this employee’s positive test in the late afternoon of Saturday, August 1. The affected employee’s last day of work was Monday, July 27. We immediately contacted Manitoba Health and are following their guidelines and protocols. Our thoughts are with this individual and we wish them a speedy recovery.”

Steinbach Credit Union announced they already had cleaning crews in their building and would be open for business Tuesday.
