Manitoba's gas prices may be lower than the national average, but the sting is still there.

Drivers were not alone in their shock watching prices jump at the pump at record levels this week. If Wednesday afternoon's numbers are any indication, Manitoba, and Winnipeg, are on the cusp of breaking gas price records.

On Wednesday afternoon, gas prices are averaging 138.4 cents per litre, according to GasBuddy.

Between Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon, GasBuddy says prices have gone up an average of 4.6 cents per litre. In the past week, gas prices have jumped up 7.6 cents, and have risen by 38.3 cents from one year ago after an unusual dip in prices.

Since GasBuddy began collecting these records in 2008, Wednesday could reach close to the highest gas price for this date. The highest recorded average price ever in Manitoba was on September 15 of 2008 at 142 cents per litre.

In Winnipeg, the average price Wednesday afternoon is hovering around 141.8 cents, higher than the Canadian average of 140.9 cents. The previous record for the highest average gas price ever was 134.9 cents.

Selkirk is seeing the highest gas rates at roughly 145.9 cents, and Dauphin the lowest rates at an average of 131.4 cents Wednesday afternoon.

People will know if any records are broken by the end of the day when the entire average is calculated out.

GasBuddy says Manitoba's average gas price is slightly lower than the rate for Canada as a whole. The provinces on Canada's west and east edges, British Columbia and Newfoundland, both have high rates. Newfoundland's rates are the highest at 155 cents per litre.
