Police say a dangerous situation ended without any reported injuries Tuesday night.

At around 9 p.m. a vehicle driving through red lights and into oncoming traffic was narrowly missing pedestrians and other vehicles on the road. Receiving calls about the erratic driver, police arrived in the area, finding the vehicle.

"They observed the suspect vehicle driving dangerously but initially did not pursue it out of concern for public safety in a residential neighbourhood," the Winnipeg Police Service says in a statement.

Following the vehicle for two hours, police attempting to stop the fleeing vehicle but did not have much success. Using police containment and a tire deflation device did not work.

At 11 p.m. in the 2700 block of Ness Avenue, the vehicle stopped on its own. At this time, police learnt the vehicle was stolen.

The driver, a 32-year-old man from Headingly, was taken into custody.

He is now facing charges including:

  • Theft of Motor Vehicle
  • Flight While Pursued by a Peace Officer
  • Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance

As mandated by the Criminal Code, the suspect has been released on an Appearance Notice.
