A man has been arrested and charged with mischief after a series of incidents at the University of Manitoba.

Earlier this year, bodily substances were found on children's clothing at the University of Manitoba's (U of M) Frank Kennedy/Active Living Centre on University Crescent.

The fluid was discovered by parents, who alerted the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS). Detectives from the WPS Child Abuse Unit are aware at this time of five incidents that took place between January 2019 and May 2019.

According to police, it is believed that during each incident the suspect retrieved children's clothing from unsecured lockers within a community change room before depositing bodily fluid in the clothing, which he returned to the locker.

"There is certainly a possibility that there may be other victims out there," says WPS Public Information Officer Jay Murray. "We would encourage those individuals who suspect they may have been victimized to contact the Winnipeg Police Service if they have not already done so."

The clothing belonged to children between the ages of five and 11 years.

The suspect was identified by police with the assistance of the U of M's Security Services Department. The identity of the suspect was further established by the Child Abuse Unit using DNA testing.

On July 27, the individual, a 22-year-old male from Winnipeg, was charged with five counts of Mischief under $5,000 and Obstruct in Enjoyment and five counts of Theft under $5,000. He is also a student at the University of Manitoba.

The man has been released on recognizance in accordance with the Criminal Code after being initially detained in custody.
