A 27-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly stabbing a Winnipeg police officer with a hypodermic needle that contained an unknown substance.

Police say officers spotted a man with a syringe inside a bus shelter on Sunday and he attacked them when asked to drop the needle.

They say an officer was stabbed with the needle in a struggle and the suspect was shot twice with a conducted energy weapon before his arrest.

He has been charged with offences including two counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon.
