Southern Manitoba is experiencing significant heat, which has prompted Environment Canada to issue a special weather statement.

Around 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for almost all of Manitoba, with only the northern tip left off. The special weather statement warns about a period of near heat warnings throughout Wednesday and Thursday.

Southern Manitoba will experience high heat and humidity on Thursday with humidex values going as high as 36°C. The Red River Valley will take the brunt of the heat.

The heat will also bring unsettled conditions into the province. There is a chance of thunderstorms Wednesday night and Thursday evening. The Thursday storms could be severe. Rain may continue into Friday as well.

Environment Canada recommends that residents drink plenty of water, schedule outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day, and keep an eye on young children, pregnant women, or older adults, who are at a higher risk of heat-related illnesses.
