Manitoba's Education Minister says history shows that world events such as COVID-19, will cause us to value our freedom.

Kelvin Goertzen says he is aware of some of the reaction out there that government restrictions during this pandemic have taken away some of our liberties. He responded by saying restrictions are not new in Canadian history.

For example, he says during World War I, there were restrictions felt in Canada. These included monetary and hydro restrictions, but also included restrictions on businesses that were taken over in order to make things for war efforts.

"After the first world war, there was sort of signs of liberty and freedom," notes Goertzen.

But, then came World War II. Goertzen says again there were restrictions until the war was over. Following that, was a surge of democracy and freedom.
