Manitoba’s Chief Medical Examiner is calling for an inquest into the death of a 16-year-old girl who was shot and killed by a police officer.

Eishia Hudson was shot and killed almost one year ago, on April 8. She and four other people were fleeing the scene of a robbery in a Manitoba Liquor Control Commission Liquor Mart in Sage Creek. Husdon was driving the stolen vehicle they were using.

Stopping at Lagimodiere Boulevard and Fermor Avenue, Hudson was shot in the torso and declared dead at the Health Sciences Centre. Her death is being considered as a homicide.

On January 28, the family held a press conference calling for a public inquiry.

"When a young officer who just came onto the force can get away with this, what does that show our people?" William Hudson, Eisha's father said during the conference.

Chief Medical Examiner Dr. John K. Younes is announcing Friday afternoon that his department will be conducting an inquest under The Fatality Inquiries Ac, with the statement saying "the chief medical examiner has reasonable grounds to believe that the deceased person died as a result of the use of force by a peace officer who was acting in the course of duty."

They will be looking at the circumstances of her death and deturning if and what anything in the future can be done to prevent a similar situation.

The date, time, and location of the inquest will be shared at a later date.
