The Independent Investigation Unit says they are looking into an incident where an officer shot at a stolen vehicle, injuring an occupant.

On November 11, 2019, the Winnipeg Police Service alerted the IIU that while chasing a stolen vehicle on Academy Road, an officer discharged his firearm at the vehicle.

The WPS told IIU the vehicle fled the area and was later found near Queenston Street, abandoned.

On January 7, the IIU learned that one of the vehicle's occupants could have been injured as a result of the shooting. Locating the occupant on November 18, the injury was confirmed by the IIU.

As they are mandated to do so, the IIU is investigating the incident.

The IIU says they are unable to provide more information at this time as the investigation is ongoing.
