A large party in the North End this week brought out the best in the Winnipeg neighbourhood, with over 1,000 people in attendance.

The annual block party on Wednesday night, hosted by Inner City Youth Alive (ICYA), is intended to bring people together in a neighbourhood that receives a lot of negative news. It's also meant to show the rest of the city the true nature of the community.

Andrew Braun, Marketing and Fundraising Coordinator for ICYA, says it was the best turnout in the 15 years that ICYA has put on the event.

"The kids and families had an absolute blast. Lots of splashes in the dunk tank, cute moments at the petting zoo, fun times at the bouncy castle, and tons of cotton candy handed out too," Braun says.

ICYA shut down Aberdeen Avenue between Salter Street and Power Street as families gathered for face painting, games, a dunk tank, petting zoo, snacks, and a BBQ. Local artists also entertained those in attendance on the mainstage.

"I think often in our community there's a lot of challenges," said Braun, "and often that can kind of go forefront in our minds in the community. But I think ultimately here, the people are just that: people that love their community, love their neighbours, love their families, and want to participate in community-oriented events."

ICYA director John Janzen says that frequent violence often prevents families in the area from allowing their kids the simple joy of playing outside.

“The party is a celebration and glimmer of hope in a community reeling from increased violence and drug abuse,” Janzen said. "The Block Party will offer a reprieve by creating a welcoming space for all children right in their own neighbourhood. “It’s a safe space for kids just to be kids. The street transforms into an atmosphere where kids are laughing and playing and families connect with each other.”
