The cold temperatures have returned, which means it's a perfect time to get back on the ice.

The outdoor skating rink at Old Market Square has been re-built, and it is opening tomorrow for public use. The space was last used as a rink almost 17 years ago.

Nick Van Seggelen,

managing partner at the local Bodegoes restaurant, has been spearheading the project along with Mike Del Buono from King + Bannatyne. Van Seggelen says that they have looked into this project for several years. "It had been in the works with the city for over a year trying to see if it was feasible," he said.

Van Seggelen said the city came back in December and said you could go ahead and build the rink, but he worried it might be too late to start building it. "We just decided that there's no time like the present to get the ball in motion," he said.

The rink was constructed in late February, and it will be test run this year to see if this project is good for future years. "If there is no damage to the grass and the paving stones around (the rink), and if the drainage (in the park) is able to handle everything that's in there, this is something that can be a yearly program," Van Segglen said.
